When a Menu Tells a Story: Celebrating the 2026 Rolex National Geographic Explorer of the Year

At Ridgewells, we believe the most memorable menus tell a story.

For the 2026 Rolex National Geographic Explorer of the Year celebration, held at the iconic Mellon Auditorium in Washington, DC, every course was thoughtfully designed to honor this year's recipient, Dr. Krithi K. Karanth, an Indian conservation scientist recognized for her groundbreaking work protecting wildlife and supporting communities across India. As guests gathered to celebrate her achievements, the menu became an extension of that story, weaving together vibrant flavors, regional inspiration, and refined presentation in a dining experience that paid tribute to both the occasion and the explorer being honored.

The evening began with a cocktail hour inspired by the bold, vibrant flavors of India. Guests were welcomed with Alphonso Mango Chili Margaritas and refreshing Cucumber Mint Jaljeeras, a nonalcoholic take on the traditional Indian beverage known for its cooling herbs and bright, savory flavors.

Throughout the reception, passed hors d'oeuvres offered guests a modern interpretation of Indian-inspired cuisine. The menu featured Red Curry Chicken Empanadas, Spicy Chicken Seekh Kebabs, and Crab Salad on Sriracha Crisps - each thoughtfully crafted to introduce layers of flavor while encouraging guests to explore something new.

One of the evening's most memorable experiences was the roaming pani puri stations, where guests were invited to help themselves to the beloved Indian street food. Crisp puris were filled with masala potatoes and peas and paired with guests' choice of tangy tamarind or spicy chili water. Interactive, unexpected, and full of bold flavor, the experience became a natural conversation starter throughout the reception.

Dinner began with a Tomato Melon Tapestry, a light, vibrant first course that was as visually striking as it was refreshing. Heirloom cherry tomato concasse layered with watermelon, celebrated the freshness of summer, offering a bright start to the meal while seamlessly carrying the vibrant flavors of cocktail hour into the next course.

Dessert carried the story into its final chapter with a buffet inspired by the warm spices and tropical flavors found throughout India. Guests enjoyed chai-spiced shortbread, cashew macaroons, ginger pistachio doughnut holes, and pineapple coconut panna cotta, each offering its own interpretation of familiar ingredients and regional flavors.

One of the evening's standout moments was an interactive affogato station inspired by one of India's most beloved beverages. Rather than the traditional espresso, warm chai masala was poured over creamy cardamom ice cream, reimagining the classic Italian dessert with fragrant spices and comforting flavors. It was a simple yet memorable finale that reflected the inspiration behind the entire menu.

One of the greatest opportunities in event catering is creating menus that feel deeply personal.

For the 2026 Rolex National Geographic Explorer of the Year celebration, the cuisine did more than nourish guests - it celebrated Dr. Karanth's extraordinary contributions to wildlife conservation while illustrating how food can honor culture, create meaningful connections, and transform an event into an immersive experience. Every dish served as a reminder that when a menu is rooted in story and intention, it becomes more than a meal - it becomes part of the celebration itself.
