Luxury Comfort Food: How Familiar Favorites Are Getting A Black-Tie Upgrade
After a long night of guests eating dishes they’ve mispronounced the entire night, suddenly a potato skin bar appears.
But it’s no ordinary potato bar: it’s crafted and compiled with a truffle glaze and short ribs. Ingredients and toppings guests are familiar with, a comfortable favorite without sacrificing style and flavor. Of course, the classics are still there with bacon, cheese, scallions, the works, creating variety among a seemingly basic staple.

Being able to elevate a familiar favorite can be key to putting an extra pep in a guest's step. Although complex meals with French techniques and components certainly serve their purpose throughout the event, being able to elevate a banal meal can be equally as impressive.
Finding creative ways to enhance a beloved dish can bring connections intra and interpersonally between guests. Rather than isolating guests with dishes that may be out of their comfort zone, providing something everyone can enjoy can equalize an event encouraging unity among attendees.
Both a fixed menu and bar options have their perks. With a fixed menu, you can be intentional about the flavors and presentation you offer to guests. Our potato skin station included a street corn variation with an elote topping theme, another being a protein-forward hot honey chicken topping with spicy pimento cheese. However, a fixed menu can present the same issues with guests having to choose between fixed items, once again potentially limiting what they may enjoy.
So, another option may be a bar style. A late-night mac and cheese bar might be just the pick me up a guest is looking for. Something that’s not there to expand their palette but feed into it. With customizable toppings like shredded buffalo chicken, pulled pork, or bacon alongside some vegetarian options like jalapeños and roasted veggies. All these items can still be prepared well, just because something is customizable doesn’t mean it sacrifices style or taste.
Being able to personalize a meal can be a breath of fresh air during a black-tie event. Of course, with a customizable bar option, you can’t control the presentation as easily as you could with a plated option. It also bears a challenge of how much and how many toppings to offer, which can lead to over, or under, purchasing. However, despite these potential faults, the guests' enjoyment of eating something they’ll enjoy outweighs the complications.
Either option is a great way to give guests some grace. Consider adding approachable sides to your next program that’ll increase attendees' comfortability and decrease their need to say bourguignon.
